Stargate Atantis fic: Double Occupancy (McKay/Sheppard, NC17)
Yay! The story that ate my brain is finally finished! I hope it eats your brains, too. Mmm, brains.

Title: Double Occupancy
Author: Isis ([info]isiscolo)
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Rating: NC17
Length: about 18,000 words
Summary: Being on the same planet with John Sheppard was aggravating enough, sometimes; being in the same body was an order of magnitude worse.
Spoilers: For most of season 1, particularly Underground, The Storm/The Eye, The Brotherhood, and The Defiant One. No spoilers for season 2, as this story is set pre-Siege, but with the airing of Duet this story becomes AU.
Notes: Credit is due to my incredible betas, [info]fabularasa, [info]z_rayne, and [info]amanuensis1 for helping to whip this into shape. Special thanks to [info]cathexys for providing me with the crack season 1 as well as the encouragement to go ahead and write this story - this one's for you.

I haven't read it yet (although EEEEE! You wrote SGA!), but I just wanted to tell you that you should post on SGA noticeboard.

Damn, that was good. Hard, and difficult, and *good*. I liked the way you had them bickering together the whole time in Rodney's body; funny and characteristic. Then learning to cooperate, all over again, like they did when they first met, and the mission against the Genii... I really liked it. Then the separation, which... just so painful. This was really good. Thank you.

Yay! This was just terrific. Really nice twist on the body-switching cliche, spot-on voices for both of them, plus the great fun of the action against the Genii. It's entirely believable by the end that they can't stand the separation -- as the reader I almost don't want them to be separate myself.

Oh, thanks, I'm very glad you liked it! Coming from HP fandom of course we have done the body-switching cliche six ways to Sunday, so it was a lot of fun to sink my teeth into a totally new fandom with new ways to explore it. And the subtexty canon relationship between John and Rodney is so rich and so much fun to write.

That was great, I had favourite lines but as they aren't up there ::points to your post:: I can't tell you which ones. Of course, I also loved the Zelenka-glimpses.

Aw, just say you love all of them :-)

I particularly enjoy writing Zelenka. He's one of my favorite characters. Although I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed, really. Having seen The Siege (look, spelled correctly!) and grooved on the McKay/Zelenka interactions there, I'm psyched to write some geek love soon.

That was fabulous! One of the best SGA fics I've read so far, and given the quality of fics in the fandom, that's saying something. The pacing's perfect, the voices are perfect, and the concept is really well-executed. The pain of their separation is really tangible without being overly melodramatic. I think the best part of it, for me, was the equality between them; the sense that they fit really well together, and complement each other. They really are equals here, and that just adds the extra bit of shine to an already excellent story.

Just... brilliant.

Wow, I really am flattered, because there are some excellent fics in this fandom. I enjoyed writing this story very much, partly because the canon does have that subtext of closeness and complementary skills, so I felt as though I was only making clear something that was really already there.

I'm particularly pleased that you single out the angsty bit as being painful but not overly melodramatic, because I tend to write more humor than angst, and so I found those scenes difficult to shape. I'm glad they worked for you.

Oh, that is really really good. The way the lines between them kept blurring more and more and then the pain of the seperation, that just seemed so right. And you got a nice balance between what was going on in their heads and the external threat of the Genii and then the awkward hurt at being apart. Really nicely done.

Thanks very much! I had a lot of fun working the arc out, getting them from alienation to closeness and back again. And the funny moments, of course, are what I like doing the best - I'm terrible at whumping my characters, I just want to pet them and tell them to hang on to the end, but I love giving them silly little lines. I'm very pleased you liked it.

And now that I am slightly more coherent, can I just say how much I loved the idea of Sheppard forcing Rodney to relax and calm down and take deep breaths, and then wishing he still could once they were separated again.

I can?

I think that will stay with me for a long long time

I didn't want them to separate either! The bit where John talks about destroying the machine b/c the temptation to just merge together and stay that way forever was too great, ahh! A hint of sadness even though they're going to be boffing like bunnies. I also really liked that John seemed to be taking the separation worse than Rodney, which strikes me as somehow in-character.

[info]isiscolo
2005-07-31 06:05 pm UTC (link)
Thanks! Yeah, the story did actually take a bit of a more serious turn there than I intended, when I got to the point where they were separating and realized just how hard it was going to be on them, how hard it had to be, considering how merged they had been. So it is sort of a bittersweet ending. But! They have sex!

And yeah, John takes it a little worse, because John is used to having a lot of friends and a lot of relatively superficial relationships - and then he has this incredibly intense relationship and it's like, wow, to the nth degree. Rodney I see as being a little more isolated, because of his arrogance and his view that nobody measures up to him as an equal, so he hasn't formed all that many relationships. He's used to being alone, as he says. But he still is strongly affected.

Ok, enough meta. I can ramble on about my stories all day! Thanks very much for your feedback.

Yay! Love the changes you've made since the last time I saw it. And I don't think I ever singled it out, but I really love this bit:

Anything to get skin next to skin. Which was clearly the best idea in the universe, Rodney decided, once they had achieved complete reciprocal nudity and were sprawled in a fractal tangle on his bed.

It's so perfectly in character with the way Rodney would think about things, with reciprocal nudity and fractal tangles. Mmmm.

This is fantastic, Isis. You took a rather cliched scenario and made it deeper, giving us an episode-worthy plot and emotiomal truths. I think I liked best the John POV, because he's more of an unknown factor to me. We've only seen occasional glimpses of the real John Sheppard, but this story feels true.

I liked the layers of details: Zelenka's cameo, Rodney's terror at the poaaible Genii threat, Rodney's in character physical modesty (espec. the whole issue of Rodney being too tense for a BM), Kavanaugh's misstep at the end, Teyla in action at the end.

My only quibble is just how inexperienced ROdney is sexually--I think canon Rodney has had a bit more luck than your Rodney. But that's a minor point, so I can go with your version.

I think canon Rodney has had a bit more luck than your Rodney.

Hmmm. I dunno. It's a debatable point, just how much experience he's had of any sort. But I gotta think that a guy who tells a gorgeous woman that he wanks while thinking about her -- no matter how many uppers he's on at the time -- is not a guy who is going to generate a whole lot of successful pick-up lines when sober.

One of the cool things about a TV show, I think, is how little time/space can be devoted to filling in all of these blanks for the characters in 52 minutes a week. We get to fill it all in ourselves. So we get former-male-prostitute Rodney in one fic, and never-been-kissed Rodney in another, and it all adds up to more sex for me, the reader, so whee!

And oh, yeah, Isis. Nice story. *g*

My brain melted reading this story. :) it was fantastic, wonderful, brilliant and I'm so glad I read it. :) I've always loved the concept of two people sharing one body but I never expected someone would take that concept and do such a great job with it. Like you did in this story. I think I'm going to end up comparing this story to the upcoming episode of Duet and I have a feeling that your story will fare better in the comparision. It was sweet, sad, funny and I loved that it took them more than 10 minutes to figure out how to function together. thanks so much for sharing.

Thank you very much, and sorry about the brain. :-) I came up with this idea before I even knew about Duet, because I love body-switch and telepathy type stories, which of course HP is rife with. At the time I'd only seen the first few episodes and read a lot of fic. So I asked [info]cathexys if anyone had written a body-switching story, and I was so bummed when she told me it was going to be canon second season! But she talked me into writing it anyway, and I enjoyed doing it, and I am just happy I managed to get it out before the show will air. And of course my story will be better - I will bet you anything that there will be no sex in Duet :-)

No, seriously, thanks very much, I am glad you liked it.
